England vs. Scotland, best up and coming fighters

Saturday 10th may 2003, Darlington

Promoter: Paul Hamilton

Originally only Martin was fighting at this show, but due to an opponent failing to appear, Jenny, who had packed her gumshield just in case, ended up on the card, against Carlisle Dragons fighter Catherine Carter.

Martin Middleton (Caledonian) vs. Ross Woodman (Carlisle Dragons)

This was both fighters first time in the ring, and with the dragons reputation for ferocity, Martin dug in deep to prepare himself mentally, exhibiting a graceful, well controlled ram muay. Within seconds of the opening bell, Martin rocked his opponent's balance with a strong low kick, taking advantage of Ross's taller frame. Ross returned fire, but couldn't penetrate Martin's defence. Moving in fast to counter Ross's greater range, Martin unleashed a jab and overhead right, which sent the Dragon's fighter crashing to the canvas. Martin moved to the neutral corner as concerned trainer and cornermen went to assist Ross. Failing to make the ten count, the decision went to Martin by way of K.O.

Jenny Gibbs (Caledonian) vs. Catherine Carter (Carlisle Dragons)

Last minute match ups are always an unknown quantity, and this proved no exception. Jenny had fought once before, 5 days previously, and was not expecting to be fighting quite so soon. Catherine had been training for this her seventh fight after a lay off of a few years, but her opponent had pulled out several weeks prior to this show. Jenny, feeling like the underdog, set out to go the distance. Round 1 saw Jenny emerge the stronger of the two girls, mixing her boxing and kicking skills well, constantly pressing forward her attack. Catherine countered well, but allowed Jenny to dominate. 2nd round saw Jenny capitalise on her strength in the clinch, and landed good knees. Not beaten yet, Catherine threw good body and head kicks, taking advantage of Jenny's lax guard. 3rd round, both fighters were tired, but Jenny seemed to be slightly the fitter of the two, allowing her to maintain a good work rate that sealed her victory. Congratulations to both the girls for an impressive display of all round thai boxing skills.
